Europe and Africa Team Up to Train the Next Generation of Space Engineers!

In October 2025, the ESA Education Training and Learning Facility in Belgium became a hub for collaboration between Europe and Africa. Young engineers from both continents participated in the Space Systems Engineering Training Course. This wasn't just a series of lectures; it was an opportunity for these aspiring space professionals to learn from each other, share ideas, and build lasting relationships. The course covered a wide range of topics, from the fundamentals of spacecraft design to the complexities of mission planning and execution. The partnership between ESA and AfSA is a significant step toward fostering a more inclusive and collaborative global space community. By investing in the training of young engineers in Africa, ESA is helping to build capacity and expertise on the continent. This will enable African nations to play a greater role in future space exploration and development projects. It ensures diverse perspectives and solutions are brought to the table. Space systems engineering is a complex field that requires a broad range of skills and knowledge. Engineers working in this area must be able to design, build, test, and operate spacecraft and other space-based systems. They must also be able to work effectively in teams and communicate complex technical information to a variety of audiences. The training course provided participants with a solid foundation in these essential skills. The course included hands-on activities and simulations, allowing participants to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. They worked in teams to design and build a miniature satellite, learning about the challenges and trade-offs involved in space mission design.
